Online PIN
Strengthen your business through secure payment methods
Overview
Online Personal Identification Number (PIN) validation is a Cardholder Verification Method (CVM) used to authenticate the Cardmember performing EMV®* contact and contactless payments at the Point-of-Sale.
When a Cardholder enters their PIN at a terminal, the PIN is encrypted by the PIN pad and sent online to the host for validation, without being stored on the Card. Card Issuers can employ the Online PIN as an acceptable Card verification method to complete a card-present EMV chip and/or contactless transaction.
* EMV® is a registered trademark in the U.S. and other countries and an unregistered trademark elsewhere. The EMV trademark is owned by EMVCo.
Benefits
Issuers
- Supports dual interface, allowing PIN for contactless as well as contact EMV transactions
- Reduces build and operational costs with simplified PIN management
Merchants and Cardmembers
- Provides an additional layer of security and fraud protection at the Point-of-Sale
How It Works
Step 1
Terminal/Merchant Acquirer sends and receives PIN from the Network
Step 2
The Network carries encrypted data securely between the sender and the receivers
Step 3
Issuer receives data and validates the PIN to verify the Cardmember, and sends a response of “yes” or “no”
